The Madhya Pradesh government has decided to impose a complete ban on liquor sales in 19 sacred regions of the state, effective from April 1, 2025. As per the new excise policy, all liquor shops in these religious areas will be shut down by midnight on March 31, with no possibility of relocation or license renewal.

New Excise Policy Comes into Effect

The state's new Excise Policy-2025 will be implemented from April 1, marking a significant step in regulating alcohol consumption near places of religious importance. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav’s government has taken this decision to maintain the sanctity of these locations. As per the policy, no new licenses will be issued for liquor or wine outlets in these areas, and existing shops will cease operations permanently.

A total of 19 sacred regions, including 13 urban and 6 rural areas, have been identified for the ban. Among them is Ujjain, home to the historic Kal Bhairav Temple, where liquor has traditionally been offered as a ritualistic offering to the deity. However, this decision has sparked discussions, as the Ujjain District Collector has written to the state government, requesting an exemption for the temple due to its unique cultural tradition. The final decision on this matter is still pending.

List of Affected Areas

Liquor shops will be shut down in the following regions:

Urban Areas: Ujjain, Omkareshwar, Maheshwar, Mandleshwar, Orchha, Maihar, Chitrakoot, Datia, Panna, Mandla, Multai, Mandsaur, and Amarkantak.

Rural Areas: Salakanpur, Barman Kala, Linga, Barman Khurd, Kundalpur, and Bandakpur.

Religious Sentiments and Government Action

This move aligns with the government’s efforts to uphold religious sentiments and preserve the spiritual environment of these regions. While many have welcomed the decision, some stakeholders are seeking clarifications, especially concerning traditions like liquor offerings at the Kal Bhairav Temple. The final stand of the state government on this matter is eagerly awaited.
