Tragic Loss: Last 2 Kuno Cheetahs Succumb to Monsoon Insect-Borne Infection

Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, addressed the recent deaths of Cheetahs in Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park (KNP). He attributed the deaths of the last two Cheetahs to infections caused by insects during the monsoon season. One Cheetah named Dhatri (Tiblisi) died on August 2, and another named Suraj died on July 14, adding to the total of nine Cheetah deaths in Kuno Park, which includes three cubs.

Yadav informed the media that the infections were a result of the monsoon and the information had been shared with experts in South Asia, Namibia, and internationally. He clarified that there were no plans for Cheetah translocation currently.

He emphasized the dedication of forest officers and young veterinarians working hard to manage the Cheetah population. The translocation project is ongoing, and its progress depends on weather conditions and other factors.

Yadav assured that each Cheetah was a priority and that experts from Namibia and South Africa were consulted. He expressed confidence in the project’s seriousness and desired success, describing it as a long-term effort with more Cheetahs planned for reintroduction annually.

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, introduced eight Cheetahs from Namibia to Kuno National Park on his birthday in September 2022, with an additional 12 Cheetahs from South Africa brought in February of the following year.

The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) informed the Supreme Court that potential sites for Cheetah introduction had been identified in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The NTCA confirmed that preliminary findings indicated natural causes of the recent deaths, ruling out unnatural factors like poaching, snaring, poisoning, road accidents, and electrocution. The Supreme Court had previously expressed concerns about Cheetah deaths in KNP and urged positive actions from the government.
