Patna News: The prestigious medical institution of the Bihar government, the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna, is set to provide free medical treatment to patients. The decision comes a day after Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav visited the institute.
IGIMS to provide free treatment
During a state cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the health department’s proposal to eliminate all fees for medical services offered by IGIMS was approved. Patients will still be responsible for covering the registration and bed charges when admitted to private and deluxe wards. Presently, all services at IGIMS, a facility that serves numerous patients daily from across the state, come with fees, albeit slightly lower than those at private medical institutions.
Additional chief secretary (cabinet) S Siddharth said, “The patients enrolled for treatment will not be charged for medicines, surgery, pathological and other tests and bed charge for admission in general wards.” Just a day ago, Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, who also oversees the health department, announced at an event held at the institute that the government would establish provisions to provide free medical treatment to all patients seeking care at IGIMS.
BMSICL will supply necessary items
Siddharth mentioned that the Bihar Medical Services and Infrastructure Corporation Limited (BMSICL) will prioritize the supply of all medicines, surgical instruments, and other equipment to IGIMS. The Director of IGIMS, Bindey Kumar, pointed out that presently, all medical procedures at the institute incur charges, with some critical pathological tests costing as much as ₹28,000, and pacemakers priced around ₹50,000.
