Bhagwant Mann highlights Punjab‘s water rights, reforming the irrigation system and reopening the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor as the Assembly passes 8 resolutions. The agenda of the Punjab Assembly’s 13th session featured eight resolutions unanimously passed by the house on major state interests. The resolutions comprise issues of river water, irrigation, opening of Kartarpur Sahib Corridor, public welfare measures, and others.  The common approval of the resolutions proved that all MLAs of the Assembly had unanimity over those issues which they thought were of importance for Punjab’s welfare. The resolutions focused attention of water, its scope for agriculture, and the access of religious shrines.

Punjab’s river-water rights take center stage

River-water sharing is a critical concern for Punjab, given its relationship with agriculture, irrigation, and water resources. The resolutions dealt with issues pertaining to river waters and utilization of resources that underpin farm operations and other livelihood activities.
Water is vital to farming communities that rely on consistent irrigation and is also a long-standing concern in the larger debate over Punjab’s water security and resource management.

Irrigation Management Remains a Key Priority

Irrigation accounts for a significant proportion of the Punjab economy. As such, the management of water resources has traditionally been an important policy issue. The discussions on irrigation management focus on how best to use available water while meeting the farmers’ needs.
These resolutions put the aspects related to irrigation under the issues that were addressed during this session of the Assembly. It remains to be seen how these resolutions will be put into practice.

Reopening of the Kartarpur Sahib corridor among key demands

Another key matter tackled through the resolutions was the renewal of the Kartarpur Sahib corridor. The corridor grants access to the Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara in Pakistan for pilgrims.
Reopening of the corridor would be a matter of great concern for devotees who wish to visit the shrine. Any decision to change the status would be made by authorities and by agreement between the two nations.

Public Welfare Features in Assembly Resolutions

These eight resolutions addressed water and religious access as well as public welfare. These issues are also among many other pressing concerns of the various needs and interests of the people of Punjab. The ordinances adopted by the Assembly in unison outlined the united stand taken on the matters discussed during the session. Further actions would lie with the authorities concerned and follow-up measures following the Assembly.

What happens after the eighth resolution is passed?

The river-water rights, management of the irrigation system, the Kartarpur Sahib corridor, and public welfare are among the main issues raised in Punjab’s 13th Assembly session. The focus will now shift to the implementation of the resolutions and if there are any further policy decisions on the topic or meetings with relevant authorities. The real effect it can have will be based on the policy, if any, and advancements in the matter.
