Punjab News: Ban on perfume spray on Guru Granth Sahib at Golden Temple

Instead, the SGPC has instructed gurdwara managements to opt for 'attar'

Punjab News: The SGPC has imposed a complete prohibition on the use of perfume sprays at the Golden Temple and other gurdwaras. Devotees visiting the Golden Temple will no longer be permitted to spray perfume on the ‘Palki Saheb’ or during the ‘parkash’ ceremony of Sri Guru Granth Sahib due to the alcohol content in perfume.

Use of Attar:

Instead, the SGPC has instructed gurdwara managements to opt for ‘attar,’ which is a natural fragrant essential oil obtained from flowers or petals.

During various rituals and events, such as ‘Sukhasan’ and Gurpurbs, devotees typically sprayed perfume in the Golden Temple. However, this practice had adverse effects on the printed contents of the holy book.

Against established ‘maryada’ within gurdwaras

Additionally, the use of perfume with alcoholic contents goes against the established ‘maryada’ within gurdwaras. To address these concerns, the use of ‘attar’ is now recommended during these ceremonies to ensure adherence to religious guidelines and maintain the sanctity of the place.

Attar is poured on cotton and also on the rumalas during ‘parkash’ of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
