Year After Minister’s Son Trampled Farmers, Families Wait for Justice

Last year during the farmers’ agitation in Uttar Pradesh in Lakhimpur Kheri, Ashish Mishra, son of Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni, allegedly trampled with a car. Now the hope of getting justice is breaking.

During the farmers movement, Charanjit Singh lost his 37-year-old son Daljit Singh.

Charanjit Singh, a farmer who lost his son, said till junior home minister Ajay Mishra Teni is dismissed, “nothing will happen”. Breaking down, Mr Singh, whose son Daljit Singh, 37, died, said: “Our only demand is that the accused should be given tough punishment. But nothing has happened.”

“His father is the junior home minister, so we have no hope. As long as he remains a minister nothing will happen. Till Teni is dismissed, nothing will happen. He is powerful,” he added.

“Let’s see whether we get justice or not, it is up to the court. It has been a year and we are at the same place. Even the trial has not started. As long as this government is in power, the case will not move ahead,” he added.

The accused Ashish Mishra is the son of Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra. Last year, eight people, including four farmers, were rammed into a car in Tikonia of Lakhimpur Kheri during the farmers’ agitation against three agricultural laws. Police said that he returned to the spot and rammed the car on four farmers and a journalist. Three more people died in the violence that followed.

At the same time, the accused Ashish Mishra, who was arrested a week after the incident, got bail from the High Court just before the assembly elections. However, after a short time, the apex court rejected the bail application.

At the same time, regarding this incident, the victim’s family says that the hope of punishment to the accused is getting tarnished day by day. Gurwinder Singh’s father farmer Sukhwinder Singh said that he too does not have much hope of getting justice.
