Sachin Pilot’s plan to fast against corruption invites Congress’s stern warning

The Congress issued a stern warning to Sachin Pilot on Monday night and said any such action on his part would amount to anti-party activity. Pilot is steadfast about holding a fast to pressure his party-led government in Rajasthan for action against graft.

Pilot will continue his day-long fast on Tuesday, according to sources close to him, in an effort to urge for action against corruption under the previous BJP government in Rajasthan.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge of the state Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa expressed strong opposition to the intended dharna by Pilot, saying any such protest against the government obviously amounts to anti-party behaviour and goes against the party’s interest.

On Sunday, Pilot claimed that the Ashok Gehlot-led government had ignored accusations of corruption that had supposedly happened in Rajasthan while the BJP was in power. He also announced his intention to fast for the entire day on April 11 to demand action.

In the midst of the factional battle, Pilot decided to create a new front against Gehlot in an effort to put pressure on the party’s top command to settle the leadership dispute before the year-end elections.

Randhawa claimed that he spoke with Pilot during the day and advised him to bring up issues on party platforms rather than criticising its own government in public.

“Pilot’s day-long fast is against the party’s interests. If there is any issue with his own government, it can be discussed in party forums instead of in the media and public,” Randhawa said in a statement.

Randhawa claimed that during his five months as an AICC in-charge, Pilot never brought up the subject with him.

“This is clear anti-party activity. I am in touch with him and I still appeal for calm dialogue since he is an indisputable asset to the Congress,” Randhawa said.

“I personally called Sachin Pilot and asked him to raise such matters at party platforms instead of going public like this,” he told PTI.

According to Randhawa, any such fast or action is inappropriate, and all issues should be discussed privately inside the party platforms rather than in front of the public.

He claimed that despite numerous chats and discussions, the two letters Pilot was referring to seeking action against corruption by the previous Vasundhara Raje government had never been raised before him.
