Relief For Mamta Banerjee? SC Instructs Calcutta HC to Appoint Judicial Officers to Overlook SIR in Bengal

Relief For Mamta Banerjee: The Supreme Court has done something very unusual in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) case that is still going on in West Bengal. In a very important order, the Supreme Court told the Calcutta High Court to choose judges to oversee the process of changing the voting rolls. The ruling could make things better between the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the state government.

Background of the West Bengal SIR Case

The goal of the Special Intensive Revision is to make sure that the voter rolls are correct before the next election. Part of the process is looking over claims, complaints, and mistakes in voter records.

Relief For Mamta Banerjee: The government run by Mamata Banerjee and the Election Commission of India, on the other hand, had disagreements about the number and ranks of officers who were supposed to do the job. The state said there was bias and raised worries that real voters might not be able to vote.

Mamata Banerjee went to court in person and said that the SIR process was more about taking things out than adding them.

The extraordinary order from the Supreme Court

On February 20, 2026, the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court was told what to do by a bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant.

The court told every district to select more district judges and district judges who are currently serving or retired to keep an eye on claims and objections that are still being processed. The judges will work with people from the state government and the ECI.

The judges said it was a “extraordinary order” for “extraordinary circumstances.” It also told important people, like the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, to hold talks to work together.

What This Means for the Government of Mamata Banerjee

The involvement of the courts helps the state government in some ways. It gets around the administrative impasse over naming officers and makes sure that there is fair control.

The Supreme Court did not stop the SIR process, though. It said that constitutional responsibilities must be carried out without any problems.

It’s clear what the order means. The integrity of the elections cannot be harmed by party disagreements. Now that judges are involved, the focus of Bengal’s voter roll revision moves to being open and fair.
