The SC on Stray Dogs has made a serious but firm step towards addressing the stray dog menace in Delhi-NCR. It has been mandated that all stray dogs are to be off the streets in eight weeks and permanently kept in shelters. In the meantime, the MCD makes no exception by the SC on Stray Dogs moving towards action, upgrading facilities, microchipping dogs, and operating awareness programs to ensure that residents are not bitten by dogs and contracting rabies.
SC Orders for Stray Dog Control
The Supreme Court stated that when a stray dog is taken into a shelter, the dog should never be returned to be left in streets, colonies, and other public places. The governments, such as NDMC, MCD, and the Delhi government, must collaborate to construct sufficient shelters within eight weeks. The Court was also warning that anybody who attempts to prevent the eviction of stray dogs will be taken to court.
Why This Step Was Taken
This was following reports of hundreds of cases of dog bites occurring daily in Delhi, with many resulting in rabies. The Court emphasized the importance of ensuring that children and the elderly are given more leeway against such attacks.
MCD’s Action Plan to Tackle the Stray Dog Problem
The MCD combat the stray dog menace by enhancing animal birth control centres and joining with NGOs. To monitor sterilisation and health information, they will chip dogs with microchips. MCD will also initiate zone-wise anti-rabies awareness campaigns. People such as Maneka
Gandhi has suggested remodelling of medical facilities, training of staff, and proper monitoring to ensure that public safety accompanies animal welfare.
