UP Municipal Elections 2023: CM Yogi cast his vote in Gorakhpur, appeals to exercise right to vote

UP Municipal Elections 2023: Voting for the first phase of urban local body elections in Uttar Pradesh is currently underway. The voting, which commenced at 7 am, will culminate at 6 pm. Voters in 37 districts will exercise their rights in the first phase of the polls to elect 7,593 representatives, including 10 mayors and 820 corporators, as per the State Election Commission.

CM Yogi, Defence Minister SIngh cast their votes

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was also spotted on Thursday morning as he cast his vote in Gorakhpur. In a tweet, Adityanath said, “Voting is our right as well as our main duty. You must also vote to make your municipal body more empowered.”

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also cast his vote in Lucknow. “I appeal to all the voters of Lucknow to cast their votes for the UP Municipal Elections 2023,” he said after casting his vote.

Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak also cast their votes in Prayagraj and Lucknow, respectively.

About UP municipal elections 

UP municipal elections will play a crucial role in testing the waters for the parties ahead of the Lok Sabha elections next year. More than 2.40 crore people are eligible to vote in the first phase. Polling for the second phase is scheduled to take place on May 11 and the counting will take place on May 13.

Districts that will vote today

Polling is being held in 37 districts — Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, Bijnor, Amroha, Moradabad, Rampur, Sambhal, Pratapgarh, Balrampur, Shravasti, Gorakhpur, Deoria, Maharajganj, Kushinagar, Ghazipur, Varanasi, Unnao, Hardoi, Lucknow, Rae Bareli, Sitapur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Gonda, Agra, Firozabad, Mathura, Mainpuri, Jhansi, Jalaun, Lalitpur, Kaushambi, Prayagraj, Fatehpur, BahraichChandauli and Jaunpur of 9 divisions of Uttar Pradesh i.e. Saharanpur, Moradabad, Agra, Jhansi, Prayagraj, Lucknow, Devipatan, Gorakhpur and Varanasi.
