Background checks will curb ‘love jihad’: Pushkar Singh Dhami

The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, announced on Friday that the government will start conducting background checks on people who have recently moved to the state in order to stop the rising cases of “love jihad,” a term coined by right-wing groups for interfaith relationships, which have caused tension in the town of Uttarkashi. A young girl had attempted to elope with a boy from a minority community. “People will be able to live in Uttarakhand only after verification,” he added.

A day after being ejected from his residence due to right-wing rallies, the minority morcha chairman for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttarkashi made a statement. Speaking to The Hindu, Mohammed Zahid, a BJP official, claimed that when he objected to right-wing protests, he was threatened with having his clothes shop burnt down.

In Uttarkashi town on May 26, two young people—one Muslim and the other Hindu—are accused of kidnapping a young girl. Following a report from the girl’s family, the two offenders were apprehended by locals, and a FIR was filed against them under the POCSO Act.

A right-wing group called “Devbhoomi Raksha Abhiyan” is said to have put up posters throughout the city urging members of the minority population to leave. On June 15, they will also organise a Mahapanchyat. Many families were compelled to leave the community.

Mr. Zahid, who has resided in Uttarkashi for more than 20 years, claimed that his party has not offered him any help and has instead instructed him to keep silent.

“Jab hum safe nahi hai to bataiye kaun sa musalman safe hoga waha (How will the Muslims stay safe there?),” Mr. Zahid added.
