Uttarakhand Cabinet Approves Relief Policy For Affected In Joshimath Sinking

The Uttarakhand State Cabinet on Wednesday approved the proposed policy regarding compensation to families/individuals affected by land subsidence in Joshimath. As per the policy, owners of affected houses in Joshimath can choose any one of the three options.

The government will give three options to the affected people

The first option is to take full compensation in cash at the rates fixed for the house and land. Under the second option, the owner can seek monetary compensation for the house. Where the government will provide them land (maximum 75 sqm, 50 sqm for house and rest for other uses) to build a house. In the third option, the owners can demand a new house in exchange for their land and the existing house.

5 slabs fixed for compensation of commercial buildings

The government will build new houses in 50 sqm area and make 25 sqm available for other uses. The same three options are also provided for commercial buildings like shops, hotels and restaurants. 5 slabs have been fixed for compensation for commercial structures like shops, hotels and restaurants. Full amount of Rs 5 lakh will be given for commercial buildings. For slab two, it will be 40 per cent compensation for Rs 5 to 10 lakh, 30 per cent for 15 to 30 lakh, 20 per cent for 30-50 lakh and 10 per cent for above 50 lakh. There is also a provision of compensation of Rs 2 lakh for those running a shop in a rented building for more than a year.


If an affected family does not have valid documents to show their ownership of the land or house, compensation can be taken on the basis of an affidavit along with bills issued by the government such as electricity, water tax or sewer tax bills. This bill should be before 2 January 2023. Along with this, a no-dues certificate is also necessary.

The amount of Rs one lakh to be given as advance relief to each affected family in Joshimath will be adjusted in the amount to be given. Those who are dissatisfied with the compensation can appeal to the committee constituted by the district administration. The process will begin after the survey of the affected houses and area is completed and has been compiled by the National Disaster Management Authority.
