Uttarakhand News: In several villages of Rudraprayag district, signboards banning the entry of non-Hindus and Rohingyas have been put up, leading to a political stir in the region. The police have stated that strict action will be taken under relevant laws if anyone tries to disrupt the peace.
The issue has emerged in the wake of protests that erupted last week in Chamoli after an incident of sexual harassment. Local residents, upset by the incident, demanded action against a specific community. Although the accused was arrested, the tensions spread to Rudraprayag, where villages like Sonprayag have now displayed posters warning, “Entry of non-Hindus and Rohingyas will result in action.”
Signs Banning Non-Hindus and Rohingyas Spark Controversy in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag Villages
Ashok Sanwal, a resident of Sirsi village in Rudraprayag, explained that villagers often leave for work, leaving women behind, which poses a risk of incidents. “That’s why we put up posters to ensure that no one enters the village without proper verification or identity proof. Recently, our temples were also robbed, so we took this step for security reasons,” Sanwal added.
AIMIM Condemns the Move
AIMIM’s Uttarakhand state president, Nayyar Kazmi, met with the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) to express his concerns over the signboards banning non-Hindus and the rising incidents against Muslims. Kazmi alleged that, following a recent dispute, Muslims were attacked, their homes were looted, and they were forced to flee. He also mentioned that some anti-social elements had posted signs warning against doing business with Muslims or entering the villages, which have since gone viral on social media.
Kazmi warned that if concrete action is not taken within a week, AIMIM would not hesitate to stage protests across the state.
