CM Yogi Adityanath: Four students of a residential Sanskrit school in Vrindavan, Mathura, died on Tuesday night after entering a water tank to clean it. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief in a post on X, calling the incident “extremely sad and heartbreaking” and conveying his condolences to the bereaved families.
What Happened at the Gurukulam
The incident took place around 10 pm on Tuesday, October 6, at the gurukulam in the Chaitanya Vihar area. Students noticed a foul smell coming from the underground tank, which is roughly 12 to 14 feet deep. One student went in and did not come out. Four others then entered one after another, apparently to help him, and also lost consciousness.
Rescue and Hospital
People at the school pulled all five students out and rushed them to hospital. Four were declared dead, while the fifth was admitted for treatment and moved to another facility for closer monitoring. Suspected toxic gas is being cited as the cause.
Who Were the Victims
Reported names are Manu Katara of Jabalpur, Rishab Sharma of Meerut, Aryan Sharma of Kaushambi and Devansh of Vidisha. Some reports put the students’ ages at 17 to 20.
CM’s Response
The chief minister took cognisance of the tragedy and directed officials to provide all possible help to the affected families. One report also says he ordered a magisterial inquiry, but this is not confirmed by other outlets.
Police Investigation
Mathura Senior Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar said the bodies were sent for postmortem and efforts are on to contact the families. Police are examining CCTV footage to understand the sequence of events. Further legal action will follow once families file a complaint.
Safety Questions
Around 200 students study at the school, and about 100 live on campus. The tragedy has raised questions about why students were allowed into a deep, enclosed tank without safety equipment or supervision.
