Delhi-NCR News: NHAI to Install View Cutters on Delhi-Meerut Expressway to Prevent Distractions and Accidents Near Aero Restaurant

Top 5 tips to follow while driving on highways

Delhi-NCR News: In response to a tragic incident on August 18, 2023, where a mother-son duo lost their lives after colliding with a container truck on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway near Masuri in Ghaziabad, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced measures to enhance safety on the stretch.

The accident was attributed to the distraction caused by the popular ‘Hawa Hawai’ aero restaurant, a collaborative venture between NHAI and a private company. The restaurant, housed in a decommissioned A320 airbus, has been drawing attention from passing commuters, leading to several instances of people stopping on the road to get a glimpse.

To mitigate the risks associated with this distraction, NHAI has decided to install view cutters along a 600-meter stretch of the expressway near Masuri. View cutters are large, solid panels commonly used to block the view and prevent unauthorized access, particularly around sensitive installations like airports and runways.

An NHAI official, requesting anonymity, stated, “This stretch has become unsafe for commuters as people often stop on the road to look at the aero restaurant, inadvertently posing a risk to other commuters. A few accidents have also happened there. So, the highways authority has planned to cut the view of the stretch near the restaurant by installing view cutters over a stretch of about 600 meters. This will involve a cost of about ₹50 lakh.”

The initiative aims to improve road safety and reduce the likelihood of accidents caused by distractions along this particular stretch of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway.
