Dengue cases swell in UP, kerosene shortage in state

Over the past few days, dengue cases and deaths from high fevers have risen in Uttar Pradesh. Government and private hospitals in the districts of Lucknow, Meerut, Barabanki, Aligarh, Bareilly, Kanpur, and Fatehpur have seen a significant increase in patient influx.

Nearly 14,162 cases of dengue this year

This year, Uttar Pradesh has seen almost 14,162 instances. Around 2112 cases have been discovered, with Prayagraj and Kanpur following closely behind with 1387 and 655 instances, respectively.

Other types of fever, including viral and Chikungunya, are also spiralling, and the rate of increase is substantially larger than it was last year.

Non-availability of kerosene

According to reports, a lack of kerosene prevents the spraying of insecticide. In the meantime, the Center has requested 55,000 litres of kerosene for use in spraying insecticide to eradicate Aedes aegypti (a mosquito that can spread dengue).

“The shortage of kerosene will be solved soon, as a letter has been written to the Centre. Currently, alternate methods have been used for spraying,” said Lilly.

Dr. Lilly Singh, the UP DG for Health, told India Today that although the number of patients is rising, the government is ready with enhanced medical infrastructure.

Significantly, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has received a letter from Special Secretary for Food and Logistics, Divya Prakash Giri, requesting the availability of 55,000 litres of kerosene.

Notably, the health department purchased Pratham pesticide, but it is not being sprayed inside of homes because kerosene is not readily available.
