The Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) has issued a warning to 94,920 property owners who have failed to pay their property tax for the financial year 2024-25. Officials stated that the civic body is yet to recover ₹40-45 crore in pending tax revenue, and strict measures will be taken against defaulters.
Penalty and Possible Action Against Defaulters
Property tax comprises three main components—house tax, water tax, and sewage/drainage tax. According to officials, defaulters will now have to pay a 12% interest on the due amount from April 1. Additionally, the municipal body may take severe actions such as sealing premises or disconnecting water and sewer connections for those who consistently fail to clear their dues.
“Now that these 90,000-odd property holders have defaulted, they will be required to pay 12% interest on the due amount from April 1. Further, we may seal premises or disconnect water and sewer connections of those who regularly default,” said Sanjeev Singh, Chief Tax Assessment Officer of the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation.
Increase in Property Tax Collection Over the Years
The incoming revenue from property tax for FY 2024-25 was projected at ₹350 crore, reflecting a steady rise from previous years:
₹294.95 crore in 2023-24
₹206.67 crore in 2022-23
₹175.47 crore in 2021-22
“Now that these 90,000 odd property holders have defaulted, they will be required to pay 12% interest on the due amount from April 1. Further, we may seal the premises or disconnect water and sewer connections of those who regularly default,” Sanjeev Singh, the corporation’s chief tax assessment officer was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying.
The Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation assessed a total of 452,000 properties, including 51,856 commercial properties, to calculate tax dues. Officials have urged residents to clear pending dues immediately to avoid penalties and ensure smooth civic services.
With a strict crackdown planned against defaulters, property owners in Ghaziabad must act promptly to clear outstanding taxes and avoid severe penalties, including financial fines and service disconnections.
