Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister CM Yogi Adityanath has taken a firm stance against offering prayers on roads, stating that Namaz should be performed in designated religious places like mosques and Eidgahs, not on streets. While addressing the media in an interview with PTI, he asserted that the Kanwar Yatra will continue on the roads as part of Hindu traditions.
His statement comes amid an ongoing debate over restrictions on Namaz on roads during Eid-ul-Fitr. Previously, the Uttar Pradesh government had imposed a ban on offering Namaz on streets, which led to protests in Meerut. In response, CM Yogi reiterated that roads are for public movement, not religious gatherings.
CM Yogi Adityanath Justifies Kanwar Yatra on Roads
Addressing concerns over the Kanwar Yatra, CM Yogi Adityanath clarified, “You are comparing the Kanwar Yatra. The Kanwar Yatra goes from Haridwar to Ghaziabad or those areas. It will run on the road only. Have we ever stopped the traditional Muslim procession? We never did. Muharram processions take place. The place to offer namaaz will be the mosque-idgah, not the road."

"आप तुलना कर रहे हैं कांवड़ यात्रा की। कांवड़ यात्रा हरिद्वार से लेकर गाजियाबाद या उन क्षेत्रों में जाती है। वो सड़क पर ही चलेगी। क्या हमने कभी परंपरागत मुस्लिम जुलूस को रोका है? कभी नहीं रोका। मुहर्रम के जुलूस निकलते हैं। नमाज… pic.twitter.com/CpXVLDziMv
The Chief Minister further emphasised that public discipline is key. “Roads are meant for movement, not religious activities. In Prayagraj, during the Mahakumbh, 66 crore people gathered. There was no violence, no looting, and no destruction. Festivals should not become an excuse for inconvenience to the public. If people seek convenience, they should also follow discipline,” he added.

“This challenge was the result of the exploitation of the parties who ruled UP for a long. The result of their misrule took the state backward in every field. Be it infrastructure, governance, welfare schemes, or employment, the impact was visible in every field. By 2016-17, UP was facing an identity crisis. Schemes launched by PM Modi were not implemented in UP by the Samajwadi Party government,” CM Yogi said.
CM Yogi Adityanath on BJP, RSS and His Political Role
Dispelling rumours about his differences with the BJP leadership, CM Yogi Adityanath firmly stated, “Where does the question of differences come from? After all, I am sitting here because of the party. Can I continue sitting here if I have differences with the central leaders? The second thing is that the distribution of (election) tickets is done by the parliamentary board of the party, and all matters are discussed in the parliamentary board. The matters reach there through proper screening. So, for the sake of speaking, anyone can say anything, one cannot shut someone's mouth.”
