Lucknow-Kanpur Namo Bharat Rail Project Moves Forward

According to officials, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has been entrusted with preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and Alternative Analysis Report (AAR) for the proposed high-speed regional transit corridor connecting Lucknow and Kanpur.

Funds Approved for DPR Preparation

The Uttar Pradesh government has approved ₹6 crore for the preparation of these reports, which will assess the project’s technical feasibility, alignment options, estimated costs, passenger demand, and implementation strategy. The reports will serve as the foundation for future decisions regarding the project’s execution.

The proposed Namo Bharat corridor is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Lucknow and Kanpur, two of Uttar Pradesh’s largest urban and industrial centres. Faster and more efficient transportation is expected to benefit daily commuters, students, business travellers, and industrial workers who regularly travel between the two cities.

Officials believe the project could help reduce travel time, ease traffic congestion on highways, and promote economic activity across the region. Improved regional transport infrastructure is also expected to encourage investment, urban development, and better integration between the two metropolitan areas.

The NCRTC, which is implementing the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) projects in other parts of the country, will examine multiple route options and operational models before submitting its recommendations. The final alignment and project structure will be determined after completion of the detailed studies.

The proposed rail corridor is being viewed as an important step toward strengthening modern public transportation infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh and supporting the state’s long-term urban mobility and economic development goals.
