The border town of Raxaul, located on the India-Nepal frontier, is set to receive a major boost in rail connectivity as the Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat trains are soon to be introduced on the Raxaul-Kolkata route. The Ministry of Railways has already initiated preparations for the project, which includes transforming Raxaul station into a world-class facility and modernizing key infrastructure.
Union Budget 2025-26
As part of the Union Budget 2025–26, a budgetary allocation of ₹60–70 crore has been earmarked for the overall development of the station. Key upgrades include overhead electric line restoration (OHE), the construction of a state-of-the-art washing pit, and enhancement of passenger amenities. The OHE electrification tender worth ₹65,03,720 has been floated, with a completion timeline of six months.
This development is crucial for the smooth operation of Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat trains on the Raxaul-Kolkata corridor. Vinay Srivastava, Divisional Railway Manager of the Samastipur Division, had earlier submitted a proposal to the Railway Board, which is now expected to receive formal approval soon.
Comprehensive Station Revamp
The ambitious station redevelopment plan includes:
Renovation of the station building
Construction of a 12-meter-wide foot overbridge
Installation of four escalators
A second entry gate for better passenger flow
Detailed Budget Allocation:
₹19.92 crore for station building renovation
₹4.5 crore for modernization of external station areas
₹8.61 crore for the foot overbridge
₹5.25 crore for escalators and related passenger facilities
₹11.73 crore for the second entry gate construction
Member of Parliament Dr. Sanjay Jaiswal has reaffirmed the commitment to transform Raxaul into a world-class station, recognizing its strategic and tourism potential due to its location along the India-Nepal border. The long-standing demand of locals for better connectivity and infrastructure is finally taking shape.
Boost to Regional Economy and Cross-Border Tourism
The proposed Raxaul-Kolkata Vande Bharat train will be a new addition to the existing fleet of 12 Vande Bharat trains serving 15 districts of Bihar. The initiative is expected to accelerate regional economic growth, strengthen cross-border trade, and promote cultural tourism.
Once operational, this project will not only enhance the travel experience for commuters in Bihar but also benefit Nepal-bound passengers, making Raxaul a pivotal hub in India’s railway network.
