Who Killed Tipu Sultan? Debate Reignited ahead of Karnataka Election

Karnataka: In only a few weeks, Karnataka will hold elections, and the BJP has turned the 18th-century monarch Tipu Sultan into an election issue. This has sparked a new debate. The party recently made an effort to appeal to the politically influential Vokkaliga population by defending accusations that two Vokkaliga leaders, rather than the British and Maratha army, had slain Tipu Sultan. The party is pitting its symbol VD Savarkar against Tipu Sultan in a fight of perception. A well-known religious figure has rejected the ideas, but the BJP won’t back down.

Allegation got the support of a number of BJP officials

A drama based on Addanda Cariappa’s book Tipu Nijakanasugalu (Real Dreams of Tipu), Tipu Nijakanasugalu (Real Dreams of Tipu), was created in response to claims made by a group of people in the old Mysuru belt that Tipu Sultan was murdered by the two Vokkaliga chieftains Uri Gowda and Nanje Gowda. While being disputed by historians, the allegation got the support of a number of BJP officials, including ministers Ashwath Narayan and Gopalaiah, as well as Vokkaliga heavyweights CT Ravi and the party’s national general secretary.

Questions on Uri Gowda and Nanje Gowda existence?

BJP politicians like Union Minister of State Shobha Karandlaje and Ashwath Narayan are also among those who assert that Uri Gowda and Nanje Gowda are supported by historical facts. The Janata Dal Secular of HD Kumaraswamy and the Congress have received support from the Vokkaliga community thus far. Both party leaders insist that Uri Gowda and Nanje Gowda were either invented figures or none of them ever existed.

Religious figure intervenes in Tipu Sultan film controversy

The state’s politician-turned-producer Horticulture Minister Munirathna announced a film on the topic earlier this week. He declared that “Uri Gowda and Nanje Gowda” had been registered as the film’s title by his studio. Nirmalanandanatha Mahaswamiji, the revered top pontiff of the dominating Vokkaliga Sri Adichunchanagiri Mahasamsthana Math, intervened on Monday. Before a judgement is made in this case, the pontiff has ordered that information, edicts, and historical records about the supposed murders of Tipu Sultan be gathered and presented before the mutt. Also, he spoke with Mr. Munirathna and requested that the proposal be shelved.
