Elon Musk working to restore vision, Human trials to commence in 6 months, All you should know

Elon Musk: Elon Musk stated on Wednesday that a wireless gadget created by his brain chip company Neuralink is anticipated to start human clinical testing in six months, with the restoration of eyesight being one of its initial intended uses.

What is Neuralink working on?

The company is working on brain chip interfaces that, according to its claims, might help disabled people move and speak once again. Neuralink, a company with offices in Austin, Texas, and the San Francisco Bay Area has recently begun testing its products on animals while waiting for regulatory approval from the US government to start human clinical trials.

During an eagerly anticipated public update on the product, Musk said, “We want to be extremely careful and certain that it will work well before putting a device into a human but we’ve submitted I think most of our paperwork to the FDA and we think probably in about six months we should be able to have our first Neuralink in a human.”

The Neuralink device’s initial two human uses will be to help the visually impaired and individuals with motor disabilities to move their muscles. “Even if someone has never had the vision, ever, like they were born blind, we believe we can still restore vision,” he added.

More than a year ago, Neuralink showed a monkey with a brain chip using only its thoughts to play a computer game.

Elon Musk has ambitious goals

Musk, who also owns the electric car company Tesla, the rocket company SpaceX, and the social media site Twitter, is renowned for his aspirational plans to colonise Mars and save humanity. The same aspirational goals are held for Neuralink, which he founded in 2016.

In the future, he hopes to create a chip that would enable the brain to operate sophisticated electronic equipment, restoring motor function to paralysed individuals and treating neurological conditions like Parkinson’s, dementia, and Alzheimer’s. Additionally, he mentions combining artificial intelligence and the brain.

Current and former workers claim that Neuralink has routinely missed internal deadlines for obtaining FDA approval to begin human studies. After complaining to Neuralink staff members about their poor development, Musk approached rival Synchron early this year about a potential investment.

Neuralink has been going behind schedule. In a 2019 presentation, Musk stated that his goal was to win regulatory permission by the end of 2020. Then, in late 2021, he declared at a conference that he wanted to begin human trials this year.
