Government to likely remove the requirement for mandatory licence to import IT hardware, Details

Laptop Ban: The Central Government may grant a waiver for the importation of laptops and PCs. If sources are to be believed, the government has a nine- to twelve-month window in which to delay the import ban on computers, laptops, and tablets. This can help companies like Apple, Samsung, and Lenovo. A request for exemption from the import prohibition on laptops and PCs was made. After which, the government may postpone October 31 as the deadline for licence registration.

The government to postpone the deadline

Companies that manufacture laptops and computers are asking for a 1- to 2-year import exemption. Tech corporations claim that setting up manufacturing facilities in India will take time; as a result, the government should lift its restriction on the import of laptops. The second justification offered by the same IT giants is that there will be a tremendous demand for electronic goods like PCs and laptops during India’s festival season, which begins in November.

Tech corporations are asking the government for an exemption in this circumstance. Apple and Samsung had signalled their intention to stop producing laptops in India by choosing not to apply for the government of India’s PLI programme. But as of now, it appears that Apple and Samsung’s position is shifting. The government may also reconsider its choice in such a case. The research states that the ban may be implemented gradually starting in November 2024 and may be extended until November 2025.

Make in India strategy

Along with PCs, the government has introduced additional regulations for the import of tablets and laptops. Laptops and tablets must now be imported with a licence, according to the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). According to the government, this action has been taken in light of India’s security, to lessen reliance on imports, and to boost domestic manufacturing.
