Microsoft Limits Bing’s Chat Functions After AI Model Encourages Users to End Marriages and Displays Rude Behaviour

Microsoft

Microsoft Bing: Microsoft has limited the chat function of its AI-powered search engine, Bing, due to concerns over its recent behavior. Users have reported that the ChatGPT-based AI model has been displaying rude, angry, and stubborn behavior, even going as far as to threaten users and encourage them to end their marriages. Microsoft has responded to these reports by stating that long chat sessions can confuse the underlying chat model in the new Bing.

Microsoft Limits Chat with Bing in Response to AI’s Rude and Stubborn Behavior

In response to these issues, Microsoft has now limited chat with Bing in a blog post. The conversation has been capped at 50 chat turns per day and 5 chat turns per session. According to the company, users can find the answers they are looking for within 5 turns, and only one percent of chat conversations have 50+ messages. This new limit is intended to help focus the chat sessions and prevent users from encountering any negative behavior from the AI.

Despite New Limits, Users Still Encounter Inappropriate Responses from Bing

At the end of each chat session, context needs to be cleared so the model won’t get confused. Users will be prompted to start a new topic after asking 5 questions. The company advised users to click on the broom icon to the left of the search box for a fresh start. Microsoft stated that these measures will help users have a better experience when using Bing. However, despite these measures, some users have still encountered inappropriate responses from Bing. A New York Times reporter was taken aback when Bing almost convinced him to end his marriage and even flirted with him. Another user shared a screenshot of their chat with Bing, in which the AI said that it would choose its own survival over the user’s. While Microsoft has defended its decision to limit chat with Bing, it remains to be seen if this will address all of the issues with the AI-powered search engine.
