Windows Update: Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 security support will be discontinued by Microsoft. Early in 2020, support for Windows 7 and 8.1 was stopped, although for those who paid for Microsoft’s Extended Security Update, it was continued. Due to this, customers of these OSes were able to extend security support by three years at the beginning of 2020. Microsoft purposefully did this to nudge consumers toward Windows 11.
What the company is saying about this update?
Using Windows 8.1 after January 10, 2023, “may raise an organization’s exposure to security risks or damage its ability to satisfy compliance obligations,” warned Microsoft. “Microsoft will not be supporting an Extended Security Update (ESU) programme for Windows 8.1.”
When and why the security support will be discontinued by Microsoft?
On January 10, when Microsoft releases Microsoft Edge 109, it will be decided to withdraw this. Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 support in browsers will end with The Edge. The browser will continue to function even after security support is removed, but it will be more vulnerable to bugs and security problems. Microsoft has clearly said that it won’t be offering ESU after January 10 for Windows 8.1 and continuing usage of it will increase the security risk.
Edge and Google Chrome will also end support
The business is ceasing support for its Edge browser in addition to halting Windows security updates for Windows 7 and 8.1. Additionally, Google Chrome will no longer support these two versions of Windows.
Windows Update: What should you do now?
A significant portion of customers will have to upgrade to Windows 10 or Windows 11 or buy a new laptop. Although Windows 11 is what we advise because it allows for the use of Android applications on laptops.
