Two much-talked-about sequels, Son of Sardaar 2 and Dhadak 2, hit the big screens this Friday. While their clash created some buzz, the box office numbers told a disappointing story. Both films opened with weak figures, falling short of their original versions and the hype around them.
Son Of Sardaar 2 Box Office Collection Day 1
According to Sacnilk, Son of Sardaar 2 collected Rs 6.75 crore (India net) on its opening day. The film started slow with just 10.24% occupancy in morning shows. It did pick up during evening and night shows, reaching around 40.27%. Cities like Lucknow and Jaipur saw better audience turnout at 39% and 37% occupancy respectively. However, major markets like Mumbai and Delhi-NCR remained dull at 20.25% and 30.50%.
Even though it led the clash, the film fell far behind Ajay Devgn’s recent releases. Raid 2 had an opening of Rs 19.25 crore—almost three times more—while Shaitaan began with Rs 14.75 crore. It only managed a slightly better start than Maa, which opened at Rs 4.5 crore.
Worse still, Son of Sardaar 2 failed to beat the Rs 10 crore day-one mark that Son of Sardaar had achieved back in 2012. Clearly, the sequel couldn’t recreate the humour or charm of the original.
Dhadak 2 Box Office Collection Day 1
Dhadak 2, starring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri, opened even lower. It collected just Rs 3.35 crore on day one. The film had a morning occupancy of 15.02%, reaching only 22.85% overall by the end of the day.
In comparison, the original Dhadak (2018), which launched Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter, opened with Rs 8.7 crore and became a big hit. Shockingly, Dhadak 2 couldn’t even match Siddhant’s last flop Yudhra, which opened at Rs 4.5 crore.
Film | Day 1 India Net (Rs crore) | Compared To Predecessor |
---|---|---|
Son of Sardaar 2 | Rs 6.75 cr | Lower than Raid 2 and original Son of Sardaar |
Dhadak 2 | Rs 3.35 cr | Lower than Yudhra and only 38% of original Dhadak |
Even Saiyaara, which is in its third week, performed better than Dhadak 2 with a Rs 4.25 crore collection on its 15th day. This further highlights the film’s poor reception.
While Son of Sardaar 2 managed to edge past Dhadak 2 on day one, both films opened below expectations. Ajay Devgn’s sequel didn’t come close to his previous box office hits, and Siddhant’s film couldn’t even beat his past underperformer.
With the weekend now crucial, both films must show strong growth to avoid being labelled as box office failures.
