High uric acid levels can cause painful conditions such as joint inflammation and kidney issues. To help manage this, AIIMS expert Dr. Priyanka Sehrawat, founder of the SabkiSehat Health Campaign, recommends avoiding certain foods that contribute to uric acid buildup.

Her list includes five key items that, when limited, can reduce discomfort and help maintain healthy uric acid levels for overall well-being.

What is Uric Acid and the Role of Purines in the Body

Uric acid is a byproduct of purine metabolism, essential for forming nucleotides like DNA and RNA in body cells. Dr. Priyanka Sehrawat Neurologist, MD Medicine and DM Neurology (AIIMS Delhi), in a quick tip shared from her car on Instagram, highlights the main culprits behind rising uric acid levels. 

She explains that purine-rich foods are key contributors to uric acid buildup in the body. Reducing intake of these foods can help in managing and preventing related health issues. Dr. Priyanka Sehrawat shares that purine can enter the body through certain foods apart from bodily production during DNA and RNA formation. This then transforms into uric acid, whose excessive buildup can cause gout and kidney stones.

Health Risks of Elevated Uric Acid

When uric acid is not properly eliminated through urine, it can accumulate in the joints, leading to a painful condition known as gout, characterized by swelling, redness, and inflammation. 

Additionally, high uric acid levels can result in the formation of kidney stones, which may obstruct the urinary tract, causing severe pain during urination and potentially leading to kidney damage or failure.

Food to Avoid in High Uric Acid 

Dr. Priyanka Sehrawat shares essential dietary advice for effective uric acid management. She recommends avoiding the following:

  • Red Meat – Especially organ meats and processed meats.
  • Purine-Rich Vegetables – Such as peas, mushrooms, spinach, and turnip.
  • Sugary Soft Drinks – High in sugar and artificial sweeteners.
  • Alcohol – Particularly beer and wine, which can spike uric acid levels.
  • Bakery Items – Including cornflakes and processed foods made with high-fructose corn syrup.

Avoiding these foods can help manage uric acid levels and reduce the risk of conditions like gout and kidney stones.

Diet You Can Follow to Balance Uric Acid

To prevent excess uric acid buildup and maintain healthy purine levels, include the following foods in your diet:

  • Fibre-Rich Grains – Such as brown rice, oats, and other wholewheat grains.
  • Fruits – Especially citrus fruits and cherries, which may help reduce uric acid.
  • Hydrating Foods and Drinks – Like cucumber and green tea to support kidney function.
  • Healthy Fats – Including flaxseeds and walnuts, known for their anti-inflammatory benefits.

These foods support balanced uric acid levels and promote overall health.

The Role of Hydration in Managing Uric Acid

Proper hydration is key to reducing uric acid in the body through urination. Aim for 2 to 3 litres or eight glasses of water per day to aid the kidneys in diluting and flushing out uric acid. 

Making simple changes to your diet and staying well-hydrated can help keep uric acid levels under control. Those suffering from gout or kidney stones should carefully review their meals and avoid foods high in purines.
