Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s much-anticipated podcast with renowned American computer scientist and AI expert Lex Fridman was released on Sunday, 16 March. The 3-hour, 17-minute, and 55-second-long discussion covered a vast array of topics including the 2002 Gujarat riots, RSS, Hindu nationalism, Donald Trump, meditation and global politics. However, two segments that garnered significant attention were PM Modi’s perspective on India-Pakistan relations, including his invitation to Pakistan for his swearing-in ceremony, and his views on the United Nations (UN) becoming increasingly irrelevant.

PM Modi on India-Pakistan Relations - ‘Every Peace Attempt Was Met With Betrayal’

During the podcast, Lex Fridman asked PM Modi about the long-standing tensions between India and Pakistan, referring to them as two nuclear powers with strong ideological differences. Fridman asked whether there was a path to friendship and peace between the two nations.

PM Modi responded by highlighting the historical roots of the India-Pakistan conflict. He stated that India agreed to partition with a heavy heart, expecting Pakistan to coexist peacefully. However, he noted that instead of maintaining harmonious relations, Pakistan has continuously engaged in proxy wars and terrorism.

“What kind of ideology thrives on bloodshed and the export of terror? And we are not the sole victims of this menace. Wherever terror strikes in the world, the trail somehow leads to Pakistan,” PM Modi remarked.

He further emphasised that he had personally taken steps towards peace, including a visit to Lahore and the invitation to Pakistan for his swearing-in ceremony. However, he noted that every noble attempt at fostering peace was met with hostility and betrayal.

“We sincerely hope that wisdom prevails upon them and they choose the path of peace. I believe even the people of Pakistan long for peace because even they must be weary of living in strife and unrest,” PM Modi added.

PM Modi on the Role of RSS in His Life

During the discussion, PM Modi spoke about his deep connection with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), calling it his "Saubhagya" (privilege) to be associated with the organisation. He stated that RSS shaped his life’s purpose and values, instilling a spirit of selfless service and nationalism.

He also highlighted the social contributions of RSS, particularly in education and healthcare. PM Modi pointed out the difference between leftist labor unions and RSS-affiliated unions, stating, “Leftist unions say ‘Workers of the world, unite,’ but the RSS labor union says ‘Workers, unite the world.’ This reflects how the RSS instills its values in its approach.”

PM Modi on UN’s Irrelevance - ‘No Real Reforms Are Happening’

Another significant topic covered in the Lex Fridman Podcast was PM Modi’s views on the United Nations (UN) and global geopolitics. He stated that just as a new world order emerged post-World War II, many believed the post-COVID era would also lead to global reforms. However, instead of moving towards peace, the world has become more fragmented, with wars and conflicts escalating.

PM Modi criticised international institutions like the UN, stating that they have become almost irrelevant as they fail to enforce international laws and regulations.

“People who disregard international laws and rules continue to act freely, and no one can stop them. In such situations, the prudent choice for everyone is to let go of conflict and move toward cooperation,” he said.

He also advocated for a development-driven approach over expansionism, emphasising that the world is now interdependent and interconnected. “Every nation needs one another, no one can stand alone,” PM Modi remarked.

With discussions ranging from AI and technology to diplomacy and geopolitics, the podcast provided a rare glimpse into PM Modi’s thoughts on India’s future and its role in the evolving world order.
