Centre revised its decision allowing 30-minute question hour in monsoon session

The Question Hour is the first hour in the House

Faced with criticism for cancelling ‘Question Hour’, Centre on Thursday revised its decision allowing a 30-minute question hour in the upcoming Parliament session.

However, the Centre stated that only unstarred questions will be taken. The parliament’s monsoon session will be held continuously from September 14 to October 1 – 18 sittings in total.

Keeping in mind the coronavirus pandemic situation, the Central government was planning to scrap the Question Hour in the Monsoon Session. However, Zero Hour and other proceedings were supposed to continue as per schedule.

The Question Hour is the first hour in the House and allows members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to pose questions to the government.

This is a climbdown of sorts as the government had earlier said that because of the unprecedented situation due to the Covid pandemic, Question Hour will not be scheduled during the monsoon session.

The decision had invited stringent criticism from opposition parties like the Congress and the Trinamool Congress.
