The video went viral on the social media site X (formerly Twitter), in which an intern and a female doctor were engaged in a heated argument in the Tonk district of Rajasthan about the wearing of a hijab in a hospital duty. The event has generated a lot of controversy, and Muslim groups and leaders of the Congress have begun demonstrations demanding that the doctor be punished.

The Incident

A video that has gone viral in Tonk, Rajasthan, has seen an argument between Dr. Bindu Gupta and an intern called Umama. In the video, Dr. Gupta asserts that when the intern is on duty in the hospital, the intern’s face must not be covered, as this is not safe for the patients. She stated that the apparent identification of medical personnel matters in any event of the mishap, such as a mistake in injection or reaction to the treatment. In its turn, the intern stated that she wears a hijab due to religious belief, and suggested that this was never an issue among patients. She added that she would reveal her face very quickly when reporting on duty, but said that she was entitled to wear the hijab.

The Controversy

This situation became serious after the video was posted online. Congress Leaders and Muslim organizations were visiting the hospital to protest against Dr. Gupta. They wanted her taken to task, citing that the religious feelings of the intern needed to be respected.

The Response of Hospital Authorities

In charge, Dr. Vinod Parveria of the hospital promised to look into the matter. He also added that there had been a similar complaint concerning the hijab venture that was recorded three days ago. The police, however, explained that no official complaint has been lodged in the case as yet.

The Bigger Picture

The case has elicited a broader discussion on the conflict between professional needs in healthcare and personal and religious convictions. As doctors emphasize that in medical practice, visibility and identification are vital, others hold that freedom of faith should be considered as well.
