Viral Video: More than 100 people were killed and 150 others were injured last Tuesday by a fire that ripped through a ballroom where a Christian wedding was taking place in northern Iraq. Online video of the incident has since become viral.
Video Footage Reveals Terrifying Moment
Video taken inside the wedding location close to the village of Qaraqosh (also known as Al-Hamdaniya) captures the exact instant the fire started and how quickly it spread. When several sparklers go off around the pair as they are dancing, the fire breaks out and the partygoers flee in fear. Flowers that are suspended from a large truss above the pair appear to feed the fire, sprouting up nearly as soon as embers hit the ground. Huge beams that were entirely on fire plummeted to the ground after the majority of people had left the main area.
Devastation and Safety Concerns at the Wedding Venue
Video taken following the tragedy demonstrated the building’s severe damage. People strolled through the site of the fire, only seeing charred metal and debris, with the only light coming from television cameras and the lights of observers’ cell phones. According to civil defence representatives cited by the Iraqi News Agency, the wedding hall’s outside was adorned with extremely combustible cladding that was prohibited in the nation.
Tragic Consequences of Flammable Materials
“The fire led to the collapse of parts of the hall as a result of the use of highly flammable, low-cost building materials that collapse within minutes when the fire breaks out,” civil defense said. Along with this, a video that appeared on social media shows the performing of final rites after the passing of 100 persons. Everyone, including the groom, is sobbing terribly since they have lost family members.
