Travel influencer Jyoti Malhotra, popularly known as Jyoti Rani, was arrested on Saturday for allegedly leaking sensitive Indian military data to Pakistan. The 33-year-old content creator now faces espionage charges under the Official Secrets Act.
Officials say Malhotra shared classified information about army locations and movements with Pakistani handlers. Her arrest is linked to Operation Sindoor, a counter-intelligence crackdown that began after the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 people. Investigators suspect she was part of a larger spy ring operating in Haryana and Punjab.
While the arrest shocked her followers, an old video from her China trip in 2024 has now added fuel to the fire. The clip is going viral again, and many are slamming her behaviour as rude and culturally insensitive.
In one train vlog from her Shanghai to Beijing journey, Malhotra asked a fellow passenger to switch seats so she could sit by the window. Another video shows her trying to hitch a ride on a local woman’s two-wheeler, even though the woman was heading in the opposite direction. The woman refused and eventually called the police after the influencer kept insisting.
In another vlog, Malhotra boarded a public bus without a ticket and got into an argument with the driver after being asked to pay. She also mocked locals in her videos, making fun of their height and calling their mobile phones “cheap.” She complained on camera about people not speaking English, which further annoyed viewers.

Back then, these clips didn’t sit well with social media users. Many criticised her for being arrogant, disrespectful, and lacking basic cultural sensitivity. Reports suggest that China banned her from the country following the backlash over her content.
Malhotra later addressed the backlash in the comments section of her “Bullet Train of China - 350 KMPH Journey” video. She said the situation was a misunderstanding caused by language barriers and claimed she never meant to offend anyone. She added that she values feedback and promised to be more careful in future videos.
However, her apology didn’t calm the outrage. Social media users continue to slam her behaviour, especially in light of her espionage arrest.
