The video shows a husband mercilessly assaulting his wife in the middle of the road. The fight involves physical assault and public humiliation of the wife by her husband. One could see the man jerking the woman's hair, slapping her several times on her face, and shouting insults at her. Her attempts to fight back are ostensibly inconsequential as she struggles against the onslaught.
What really makes this scenario worse is the seeming passivity of the bystanders. Although the assault took place in a very public place, most of the people surrounding the victim are pretty passive; they watched the whole incident but did not do anything to help. This inaction on the part of the bystanders stirred up anger and concern for the viewers.
The video, which was uploaded on August 5, has gained over 125,000 views. Many people have responded to this video, showing their disbelief and anger toward what the man did. Social media users have come out overwhelmingly against the abusive husband and lent more awareness and intervention into such domestic violence cases.
The incident mirrors broader social problems where incidents of domestic violence are normalized or even ignored. It raises questions regarding the role of the bystander and whether more proactive measures can be taken to address and prevent domestic abuse. These disturbing visuals remind one of the urgent need for societal change and support systems to protect the victims and hold perpetrators accountable. The online discussions continue with increased calls to give better reactions to domestic violence and for acts of domestic violence to be responded to and not just witnessed.
