Taliban: Harsh limits on Afghans’ religious freedom, says US Panel

Taliban: On Tuesday, a US Commission said that conditions for religious freedom in Afghanistan have drastically worsened from the moment the Taliban has come into power last year after US-led foreign troops pulled out after 2 decades of war.

The “harsh enforcement” of Sunni Muslims extremists “violates the freedom of religion or belief” of the majority of Afghans, the US Commission said on religious freedom. After the Taliban marked a year since it came into power last year, the US congressman created a panel after 9 days.

The report in the meeting also stated that the Taliban pledged to protect all ethnic and religious groups. Yet, it said, “Religious freedom conditions in Afghanistan have drastically deteriorated,” with the militants reintroducing “harsh restrictions on all Afghans” based on their hardline interpretation of Islam.

Those negatively affected include religious minorities, Afghans “with differing interpretations of Islam,” women, the LGBTQ community and those who follow no faith, the report said.

“The Taliban’s seizure of Afghanistan has led to a rapid decline and near extinction of the already small Afghan Hindu and Sikh communities” and the militants deny “the existence of a Christian community,” which must worship in hiding, the report added.

The report said that the Taliban is only responsible for the deaths of dozens of Hazaras, a minority that follows Shiite Islam, they failed to protect themselves from the attack of the Taliban.

They claimed that the Taliban has again established a ministry that looks over morality police and has always targeted women by carrying out strict codes for behaviour and dress (covering faces), limited movement, participation in sports, education, and work.
