A Slew of British Ministers Resign Amid Boris Johnson Scandal

Britain’s health minister and finance ministers resigned on Tuesday in the final blow for Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Attempting to apologise over the newest scandal involving a sexual misconduct complaint against the now suspended, Deputy Chief Whip Chris Pincher, only pushed his ministers further away.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid announced his resignation in a statement, saying he could “no longer continue in good conscience.”

Moments later, finance minister Rishi Sunak also announced he was quitting.

In the end, it was the issue of ministers being informed incorrectly about the appointment of a member of Parliament known for misconduct to an important government post that proved too much for Rishi Sunak—the first Indian-origin politician to hold the high UK Cabinet office of Chancellor of the Exchequer.

“In hindsight, it was the wrong thing to do. I apologise to everyone who’s been badly affected by it,” Johnson told broadcasters.

In the resignation letter to the PM posted to social media, Sunak pointed to the “immense challenges” that Britain was facing, adding that the people were “ready to hear the truth”.

“In preparation for our proposed joint speech on the economy next week, it has become clear to me that our approaches are fundamentally different,” Sunak said in his statement.

Following this, two more ministers resigned from the UK government on Wednesday, piling further pressure on Prime Minister Boris Johnson following the departure of his health and finance ministers.

Will Quince, minister for children and families, said he had “no choice but to tender my resignation” while junior transport minister Laura Trott said she was quitting over a loss of “trust” in the government.

The 42-year-old Conservative Party MP was forthcoming not only about the incompetence of the government that mistake reflected but also about his dissatisfaction with his boss’ handling of economic policy through the difficult post-pandemic times.

“Our country is facing immense challenges. We both want a low-tax, high-growth economy, and world-class public services, but this can only be responsibly delivered if we are prepared to work hard, make sacrifices and take difficult decisions,” reads his letter.

“I firmly believe the public is ready to hear that truth. Our people know that if something is too good to be true then it’s not true. They need to know that whilst there is a path to a better future, it is not an easy one,” he said.

But a day is a long time in politics, so it remains to be seen how his career unfolds amid the ongoing Conservative Party turmoil.
