BBC chairman Richard Sharp resigns

BBC Chairman Richard Sharp resigned following a controversy over his role in arranging a loan for former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson. He resigned on Friday (April 28).

BBC chairman Richard Sharp said he had agreed to stay on until the end of June, giving the government time to find a successor. The country’s public appointments watchdog is probing how Sharp was chosen by the government to be the broadcaster’s chairman in 2021.

Violated the rules made by the government

The report found that Richard Sharp did not disclose a potential conflict of interest. Apart from this, he violated the rules made by the government for public appointments. Despite the violations, appointments involving Richard Sharpe were not held to be invalid.

On this, Richard Sharp said that I have decided that it is right to prioritize the interests of the BBC, so this morning (Friday) I have resigned as Secretary of State and BBC Chairman to the Board.

Richard Sharp accepted the allegations

Richard Sharp had earlier accepted the allegations leveled against him. He believed that he had arranged a meeting between the country’s senior bureaucrat, Cabinet Secretary Simon Case, and Johnson’s cousin Sam Blyth. During that time, in the end of 2020, he had offered to provide financial help to the then PM.

At the time of that meeting, Richard Sharp had already applied for a senior BBC job. An inquiry team was set up by the Public Appointments Commissioner to probe the claims first published in the Sunday Times. The report found that Sharp was recommended for the appointment.
