China coup: XI Jinping’s latest appearance after trip abroad quashes unverified rumors

New Delhi: The success of Ukraine against Russia causes concerns in Taiwan, a spurious coup story shows misconceptions of Beijing’s policies, and China’s ambassador to the UN makes a vague comment regarding territorial integrity.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has made his first public appearance since his return from a trip to Central Asia, putting an end to baseless reports of a “coup” that had prompted a flurry of speculative media coverage prior to a significant Communist Party conference.

According to official broadcaster CCTV, Xi visited a Beijing exhibition on Tuesday that highlighted China’s accomplishments during his ten years in office.

On the network’s primary nightly broadcast, Xi was portrayed viewing the exhibits at the Beijing Exhibition Hall while sporting a face mask. Photos of him dominated the displays. Premier Li Keqiang and other prominent figures, including every member of the ruling Politburo Standing Committee of the party, were with him.

Xi has not been spotted in the open since getting back to Beijing on September 16 from a regional conference in Uzbekistan. It had been over a thousand days since he had travelled abroad due to the epidemic.

His disappearance sparked a flurry of unfounded internet allegations that he had been put under house arrest and deposed in a military coup.

Unverified videos of military trucks on the road and accusations of widespread flight cancellations—which are frequent under China’s zero-Covid restrictions—further fed the unfounded suspicions.

Because major decisions are frequently taken behind closed doors in the very opaque Chinese political system, it is no surprise that the rumour was able to spread so swiftly.

Even seasoned watchers of elite Chinese politics maintain a “never say never” attitude because to the lack of information, observing that while a coup remains very implausible, it is hard to know for sure what is actually happening.

On this case, the majority were quick to note the complete absence of convincing evidence behind the alleged “coup.” Instead, they pointed out that Xi was probably adhering to his own quarantine guidelines and continuing to isolate himself after arriving from overseas.
