China: Republic News reports that Beijing is encouraging all the factions of the Nepalese communist movement to unite before Prachanda’s visit to China in July or August this year.
Prachanda or Pushpa Kumar Dahal is the Prime Minister of Nepal and the leader of the Communist Party of Nepal- Maoist.
Also called CPN-Maoist Centre, this party was formed in 1994 after breaking away from the Communist Party of Nepal-Unity Centre.
This would be PM Prachanda’s second visit to Beijing.

Hectic efforts for unity

Leaders of various communist parties in Nepal are trying to unite once again. These leaders include Netra Bikram Chand (Biplab) and Mohan Baidya. The Communist Party of Nepal (Marxist) and the Communist Party of Nepal (United Socialist) are also trying to unite.
The unification efforts are going on at three levels.
The Chinese ambassador to Nepal Chen Song is acting discreetly to bring all the communist parties together.
Republic News also reports that a group of Chinese intellectuals is in Nepal currently to unite all these parties.
In addition, several Nepalese eminent citizens like former President Bidya Devi Bhandari, former Speaker, Agni Prasad Sapkota and the current Speaker Ganesh Prasad Timilsina are in China, trying to unite the diverse factions.

Why is China interested in Nepal’s communists?

Both countries had begun talking on a wide ranging of subjects like trade, security and defence when the Communist Party of Nepal was in power.
After CPN’s fall and breakup, these topics are in limbo. China wants to restart talks on these subjects and sign agreements with Nepal quickly. This is why Beijing is working so hard to bring Nepal’s various communist factions on a common platform.
People in the know say that first a Socialist front would be created which would later be converted into the Communist Party of Nepal.
