Russia sentences journalist in absentia for disseminating fake news

Senior journalist Alexander Nevzorov has been sentenced for 8 years by a Moscow Court , after it found it guilty of spreading “fake news” about the Russian Army.

Russia sentences Senior Journalist Nevzorov for 8 years in absentia

Case against Nevzorov was opened last year for posts related to Social Media in which he accused Russia’s armed forces of deliberately shelling a maternity hospital in Mariupol, an assetion which has been denied by the Moscow, which has stated it as false.

The court stated that Nevzorov wouold serve his term in a penal colony if he ever retuned to Russia, and has also been banned for managing internet content for four years.

Nevzorov, who has nearly 2 million subscribers to his YouTube channel, referred to the inquiry against him as one sided and fled the country with his wife in March of last year.

Nevzorov flees to Ukraine after condemning Russia

After loudly condemning Russia’s invasion and labelling the war a “crime” with Ukraine as its victim, he was given Ukrainian citizenship in June.

Russia has passed a law imposing jail terms of up to 15 years for individuals found guilty of knowingly disseminating “fake” news about its troops eight days after invading Ukraine last February.

Since then, Russia has blocked access to news websites that publish articles that contradict Moscow’s official position on the conflict, and numerous Russian and foreign news outlets have fled the country.
