US Iran War: The US-Iran confrontation has now entered another very dangerous period, with the fighting now having extended itself from the waters around the Strait of Hormuz to Jordan and the rest of the Gulf region where US military bases are located.

What started the latest escalation?
The most immediate clash took place in the Strait of Hormuz which is one of the world’s most crucial energy corridors. The US had been trying to keep shipping in the strait open while mounting both military and economic pressure on Iran. The US attacks on Iranian tankers were the result of attacks on US ships by Iran. The US said its move was in response to Iran’s attacks against US forces and ships. After this, Iran expanded its attacks from maritime targets.
Why are Jordan and the Gulf dragged into it?
Despite not being a direct party to the US-Iran stand-off, Jordan finds itself under threat due to hosting of the US military forces in its territory. Iran has targeted American facilities in Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait and Iraq before. In fact, recent missile strikes at a US base in the vicinity of Al Azraq have demonstrated that the tension may quickly spread far beyond Iran’s borders. According to Jordanian and US authorities, most missiles were intercepted and there were no reported casualties in the latest attack.

Any prolonged disruption could affect oil shipments, insurance costs and transport routes. The latest escalation has already pushed Brent crude close to $100 a barrel, reflecting growing concern about supply disruptions. For Gulf economies, the issue is also about maintaining trade and export routes.
