A quiet handshake between PM Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping in Kazan last October may have started a new chapter in global politics. Russian President Vladimir Putin brought the two leaders together after years of tension. Now, reports suggest that this meeting could be the beginning of a major power shift.
At that time, our nation was in conflict with Pakistan. As expected, China backed Pakistan, but this time, it was more cautious. Experts call it the “Russia Effect” by pointing it to Moscow’s role in softening China’s stance.
Reports Hint At India-China-Russia Triangle
According to media reports, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently said that India and China are “close to resolving” their border issues. He added, “There’s now a system in place to keep talks going and avoid escalation.”
Lavrov also suggested that if India and China fix their differences, they could form a new strategic triangle with Russia. This triangle, he said, could push back against Western pressure and challenge Donald Trump’s “global arrogance.”
Russia sees China as a brother, India as its best friend, and itself as the bridge between the two. Putin’s dream is a new global bloc that reduces America's influence and gives more power to Asia.
India Stays Neutral But Leads From The Middle
It’s said that India isn’t taking sides and is a part of both BRICS (with Russia and China) and the Quad (with the US, Japan, and Australia). This middle path confuses both sides. The US worries about India’s ties with Russia. Russia wants it to fully commit.
But India has its own goal to lead a new “Global South.” This includes partners like Israel, Australia, and Japan. Our country's strategy is to support where it makes sense, stay out where it doesn’t, without blind loyalty.
India buys weapons from France, Israel, and Russia. It does this not out of loyalty but because it has the money and freedom to choose. Unlike Pakistan, which often follows others, our country sets its own terms.
If our border tensions with China are resolved, the partnership could grow stronger. With Russia’s support, this new triangle might challenge the existing power order. BRICS is already talking about ditching the US dollar (something that reportedly angered Trump).
As the US keeps targeting China with tariffs and pressures Russia over Ukraine, India is building its own path. It’s not about choosing East or West anymore. It’s about staying flexible and strong.
Experts feels that the world might not be led by just one superpower in coming years. A new order could emerge with India right at the centre.
