India, Germany detailed discussions on deepening bilateral cooperation including energy

India and Germany on Monday held detailed discussions on deepening bilateral cooperation including energy, trade and climate change and signed a Comprehensive Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement that will make it easier for people to study, research and work in each other’s country.

The two countries exchanged views on regional and global issues, including the Indo-Pacific, the Ukraine conflict, the situation in Afghanistan, issues related to Pakistan, and the situation in Syria.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that the signing of this agreement between India and Germany is a strong indication of the basis for a more contemporary bilateral partnership.

At the same time, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said that at a time when the world is facing difficult situations, it is important for us to move forward together.

Baerbock arrived in India on Monday on a two-day visit. His visit comes at a time when India assumed the formal chairmanship of the G20 group just four days back.

In a joint press address with Baerbock after the meeting, Jaishankar said, “We discussed the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan, including the issue of cross-border terrorism.”

Jaishankar said that we also discussed the issue of Indo-Pacific and the issue of Iran. He said that it was very useful and fruitful to hear the views of the German Foreign Minister on various subjects.

He said we also discussed creating resilient supply chains and enhancing cooperation in the digital sector. Along with this, the topic of more secure global economy was also discussed in our discussion.

External Affairs Minister Jaishankar said that along with discussions on increasing people-to-people contact, we signed a Comprehensive Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement in this direction, which would make it easier for people to study, research and work in each other’s country.

Jaishankar said that the issue related to visa also came up in our discussion

Germany’s Foreign Minister Baerbock said that the world is facing difficult times and at this time India has assumed the presidency of the G20, as well as the monthly presidency of the United Nations Security Council.

The Foreign Minister of Germany said that we want to further increase security cooperation with India. Baerbock said that India is the largest democracy and emerging economy and is a role model for many countries of the world.

He said that we have also seen the situation of Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

Baerbock said Germany supported a rules-based international order that was in line with the United Nations Charter.

External Affairs Minister Jaishankar said that India’s stand on the Ukraine issue is clear that this is not an era of war and a solution should be found through dialogue.

Earlier, Baerbock in his statement described India as a natural partner of Germany. He said that India will play a decisive role in shaping the world order in the 21st century, especially in the Indo-Pacific region, and that traveling to India is like traveling to one-sixth of the world.

He said, “The Government of India has not only set an ambitious target for itself in the G20, but has also set a target for our country. India wants to go further than ever in the energy transition when it comes to expanding renewable energy and Germany stands by India in this.”

Baerbock said that we are all affected by the impact of the climate crisis, livelihoods have also been damaged in Europe and India, in such a situation, we want to take our cooperation beyond the level of strategic alliance in the economic, climate sector and security policy. And it is not just empty talk.”

Meanwhile, officials said that topics such as deepening bilateral cooperation including energy, trade and climate change were high on the agenda of discussions during the meeting between the two foreign ministers.

Ahead of the meeting, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar shared a picture and tweeted, “Welcome to India.”

On Baerock’s arrival in India on Monday, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted, “Welcome to German Foreign Minister Baerbock on his first official visit to New Delhi. It is an opportunity to review progress in our strategic partnership and exchange views on regional and global developments.”

India and Germany celebrated the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in the year 2021. This year Prime Minister Narendra Modi went to Berlin to participate in the 6th Indo-German Inter-Governmental Conference. Apart from this, India had participated in the meeting of G7 countries as a participating country.
