Kim Jong Un: In a peculiar mandate, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has set extraordinary quotas for citizens to supply compost, a euphemism for human excrement, ahead of the spring farming season. Adults are required to contribute 1,100 pounds, while schoolchildren face a reduced quota of 440 pounds. The bizarre requirement far exceeds the average annual production of 312 pounds per person, causing widespread panic.

North Korea's Bizarre Fecal Quota Sparks Black Market and Violence

The mandate, which must be fulfilled by January 20, has triggered a black market for feces, with merchants capitalizing on the demand. Reports have emerged of people stealing from public toilets and even their neighbors to meet the quotas, leading to chaotic and sometimes violent confrontations.

One such incident occurred in Unsan County, South Pyongan Province, where a dispute escalated into a fight involving axes and shovels. According to Radio Free Asia (RFA), a factory worker attempted to steal feces from a latrine near another man’s home. Upon discovering the theft, the homeowner retaliated with a shovel, injuring the factory worker. The altercation only ceased when a neighborhood-watch leader and a social security agent intervened. Both men were hospitalized due to their injuries.

The drive highlights North Korea’s desperate efforts to boost agricultural output amidst ongoing economic hardship and international sanctions. However, the extreme measures have left citizens scrambling to comply and avoid punishment.

Kim Jong Un, who recently celebrated his 41st birthday, has often issued unusual directives, but the compost quota has been particularly controversial. Citizens have expressed frustration and fear, while experts suggest the policy underscores the regime's dire economic situation.

As the deadline looms, tensions remain high, with authorities tightening surveillance to ensure compliance. Meanwhile, the absurdity of trading human waste on the black market reveals the lengths to which people will go to survive under Kim’s authoritarian rule.
