Nepal: Panel suggests complete five-year term for PM Oli amid intra-party rift

PM K P Oli will complete his five-year tenure amid intra-party rift as suggested by a six-member panel formed by the ruling Nepal Communist Party. Executive chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ will be allowed to exercise his full executive power, said a senior party leader on Sunday.

The Nepal Communist Party on August 14 formed a six-member task force to resolve the inta-party rift as Oli and Prachanda continued their talks after a week of interruption.

The task force led by General Secreatary Bishnu Poudel was made with the ain to sort out differences in the Party after Prachanda and senior leader asked PM Oli to resign.

The panel includes Standing Committee members Shankar Pokhrel, Janardan Sharma, Bhim Rawal, Surendra Pandey and Pampha Bhusal.

According to senior NCP leader and Standing Committee member Ganesh Shah, the panel has suggested that Prime Minister Oli should continue his full five-year term while Prachanda should exercise his full executive power over the party’s affairs whatsoever.

After Oli was elected prime minister in 2018, he and Prachanda had suggested a pact under which both of them would share the position turn-by-turn. However, the panel has suggested the top leaders to stick to one-man-one-post principle and sort out differences between them by promoting coordination and collaboration.

According to Shah, the report hasn’t been approved in the Standing Committee yet, which is likely to be summoned this week.

A bitter internal rift has taken place inside the ruling NCP party after its top leader, including Prachanda, demanded PM Oli’s resignation, stating his recent remarks against India were “neither politically correct nor diplomatically appropriate.” However, Oli refused to give up his post as the prime minister as well as a co-chairman of NCP.
