North Korean: To foster a sense of patriotism, the government advises parents to name their children ‘bomb,’ ‘gun’ or ‘satellite’

North Korean:The government has bizarrely instructed parents to give their children nationalistic names like “bomb” and “gun” as the dictatorship cracks down on names with softer, more uplifting connotations.

In the past, Pyongyang had permitted the use of names that ended in softer vowels, including A Ri and Su Mi. But now, if a person’s name isn’t “revolutionary” enough, the government will demand that they alter it, along with the names of their children, to ones that are more ideological and militaristic. They’re urging people to give their kids names that end in a consonant, and they’re threatening to punish those who don’t. Names like Chong Il (gun), Chung Sim (loyalty), Pok Il (bomb), and Ui Song are appropriate (satellite).

Those lacking final consonants have until the end of the year to give their names political connotations

At the neighborhood-watch unit’s resident meetings, notices have consistently been sent to amend any names without final consonants. People without final consonants have till the end of the year to give their names political connotations in order to adhere to revolutionary norms. Many parents are upset about the measure and are hesitant to implement it. The source also questioned whether the government was enacting the rule to ensure that names accurately reflect the “current era of starvation and oppression.”

Authorities criticised numerous generations of families for giving their children names that were not North Korean

Authorities criticised several generations of families for giving their children South Korean, Chinese, and Japanese names rather than North Korean ones. Residents secretly make jokes about adopting dated names like Yong Chol, Sun Hui, or Man Bok. These are every bit as antiquated as Gladys, Mildred, or Eustace.
