PM Modi invites Australian PM Albanese to watch Cricket World Cup, celebrate Diwali in India

PM Modi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese to watch the Cricket World Cup and the Diwali celebrations in India later this year. The cricket extravaganza is scheduled to be held in India in October-November, Diwali thid year falls on November 12.

PM Modi is on a three-day visit to Australia. He extended the invitation to PM Albanese at a joint press briefing in Sydney. Invoking cricket, PM Modi said India-Australia ties have entered “T20 mode”.

Invitation to Albanese

He said, “I invite PM Anthony Albanese and all Australian cricket fans to India for the Cricket World Cup this year. At that time, you will also get to see the grand Diwali celebration in India.”

“This is our sixth meeting in the past one year. This reflects the depth of our comprehensive relations and the maturity of our ties. In the language of cricket, our ties have entered T20 mode,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister discussed with PM Albanese the attacks on temples by separatist elements in Australia in a bilateral meeting. He said such elements would not be tolerated that could jeopardise the relations between India and Australia.

India-Australia relationship strong

He said that that PM Albanese assured him of taking strict action against such elements. “We will not accept any elements that harm the friendly and warm ties between the India-Australia relationship by their actions or thoughts. PM Albanese assured me once again today that he will take strict actions against such elements in the future also,” PM Modi said.

In a push to promote renewable energy, PM Modi said a task force will be set up on green hydrogen. “We had constructive discussions on strengthening our strategic cooperation in the sectors of mining and critical minerals…We have decided to set up a task force on green hydrogen,” PM Modi said.

This is PM Modi’s first visit to Australia since November 2014, months after his first government came to power.

Australia-India Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement

PM Albanese said both sides reiterated their shared ambition for an early conclusion of the Australia-India Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement later this year.

On his part, PM Modi said the agreement would strengthen the economic partnership between the two countries and open up new avenues in bilateral trade.

The Australian Prime Minister announced a new Australian Consulate General in Bengaluru. “I am also pleased to announce the establishment of a new Australian Consulate General in Bengaluru which will help connect Australian businesses to India’s booming digital and innovation ecosystem,” PM Albanese said.
