Rishi Sunak Appreciates Lizz Truss’ ‘Noble Aim’ In First Speech As UK PM: ‘Some Mistakes Were Made’

New Delhi: Britain’s new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, in his first public address, said that he is here to fix Liz Truss’s ‘mistakes’. He added that the country will have to make ‘difficult’ choices. However, the former chancellor praised his predecessor’s “restlessness” and her “noble aim” to improve economic growth in the UK.

Rishi Sunak First Speech As UK Prime Minister

“Some mistakes were made, not born of ill will or bad intensions – quite the opposite in fact – but mistakes none the less,” he said.

Right now our country is facing a profound economic crisis, the aftermath of Covid still lingers, Putin’s war in Ukraine has destabilised energy markets and supply chains the world over.

Sunak pledged to approach the problems with “compassion” and “to place economic stability and confidence at the heart of this government’s agenda”.

“The government I lead will not leave the next generation, your children and grandchildren, with a debt to settle that we were too weak to pay ourselves,” he added.

“I will unite our country not with words but action. I will work day in and day out to deliver. Trust is earned, and I will earn it,” the youngest UK PM said.

Rishi Sunak Elected Prime Minister Of UK

On Monday, Sunak made a comeback in politics by being chosen as the next leader of the Conservative Party without opposition after former prime minister Boris Johnson withdrew his name from consideration and Commons leader Penny Mordaunt abruptly withdrew.

Sunak succeeds Ms. Truss, who had bid him farewell during the protracted leadership campaign to succeed Mr. Johnson, but who afterwards became the UK’s shortest-serving prime minister due to the failure of her tax-cutting mini-budget. Truss had an appointment with the King earlier to formally tender her resignation after holding the final cabinet meeting.

She wished Sunak “every success” and added, “I hope brighter days lie ahead,” in her final statement as prime minister.
