Russia: Russian participation in the New START pact, which places restrictions on the two countries’ strategic nuclear arsenals, has been suspended, according to President Vladimir Putin.
At the conclusion of a significant speech to parliament, about a year into the conflict in Ukraine, Putin informed lawmakers: “In this regard, I am compelled to declare today that Russia is suspending its participation in the strategic offensive armaments accord.”
Limit on the number of strategic nuclear weapons
The New START pact was signed in Prague in 2010, went into effect the following year, and was renewed for a further five years in 2021, just after Joseph Biden became US President. It places a limit on the number of strategic nuclear weapons that the US and Russia may deploy, as well as the use of bombers and missiles that are launched from land, sea, or air platforms.
