Russia puts nuclear bombs on Belarus soil

Vladimir Putin: Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed that Moscow has deployed tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. He further said that more such weapons would be given to Belarus by the end of this summer.

Putin was speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

He said this is a “deterrence measure against all those who think about Russia and its strategic defeat.” Putin was making this remark in response to a question about whether Moscow will use nuclear weapons against Ukraine.

Belarus shares its southern borders with Ukraine which has been fighting against Russia since February 2022.

Earlier this week, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko claimed that he has received nuclear bombs “three times more powerful than Hiroshima and Nagasaki” from Russia.

What is a tactical nuclear weapon?

Also called a non-strategic nuclear weapon, a tactical nuclear weapon is used only in battlefields and targets enemy installations. It doesn’t have a radioactive fallout like the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs.

Through tactical nuclear bombs, Russia hopes to dissuade Ukraine from inflicting widespread damage on the Russian forces.

According to BBC, the Russian President said, “Why should we threaten the whole world? I have already said that the use of extreme measures is possible in case there is a danger to Russian statehood.” He was answering a question about whether Moscow would ever use its nuclear weapons.

African leaders to visit Moscow

Putin is due to meet African leaders who are currently in Kyiv as part of a peace initiative.

The Ukrainian capital was attacked by Russian missiles while the African leaders were in the city.

According to BBC, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said, “We came here to listen and recognise what the people of Ukraine have gone through.”

Kyiv says it won’t halt its counteroffensive until Russia vacates the whole of Ukraine.
