On Monday, the head of the 1922 Committee of Conservative parliamentarians named Sunak as the party’s new leader, setting him up to become the next prime minister of Britain. The criteria for choosing and replacing the party’s leader are established by the committee.

Sunak will succeed Liz Truss, the British prime minister with the shortest tenure.

Following one of the most volatile periods in British political history, the next UK PM emerged as the front-runner when his competitor Boris Johnson withdrew from the contest and said he was unable to maintain party unity.
